It’s dangerous to use your phone while driving your car on the road. However, this can definitely be transferred to the world of aviation.
On a JetStar flight from Darwin, Australia to Singapore, one of the pilots was checking their text messages on their phone. However, he was so distracted by his text messages, that the Airbus 320 nearly landed without landing gear.
The pilot had failed to turn off this phone before takeoff. The pilot was getting text messages at about 2000 feet and he did not realise what was happening until the plane was at 720 feet. He tried to retract the landing gear, but the plane was too low. At about 392 feet the crew decided to abort the landing. However, the crew was able to land the plane safely on the second attempt.
You might think that this has nothing to do with tech, but it does. This is to do with the different distractions that technology can cause to our lives. I guess the point that I am trying to raise with this story, is that you can by all means use any kind of tech whilst your are not driving any kind of vehicle. However, if it’s something that requires you to take your hands off the controls, then you should not be using it whilst you are in control of any kind of vehicle. In short, it is recommended that you keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. In the case of aviation, you should keep your hands on the controls and eyes on the sky.
