Nokia Announces the Lumia 925 (It Rocks Windows Phone 8)

nokia_lumia_925_color_rangeI think it’s safe to say that announcement season is well and truly underway.

Earlier today, Nokia announced a new phone. It’s called the Nokia Lumia 925. This guy has got a 4.5-inch screen with a resolution of 1280×768, 1GB of RAM, a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage.  In terms of the camera, you have an 8.7-megapixel camera which is capable of shooting 10 photos one after the other. You will also have a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera.

The Nokia Lumia 925 will be releasing in the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain and China in June and will cost you about €465 before taxes(approximately £475 including VAT in the UK). USA and “other markets” will follow soon after that.

Samsung reveals first photo of the Galaxy S4

New Samsung phone first glimpseWe are only 2 days away from Samsung’s Unpacked event in the USA which will be taking place sometime on Thursday evening(UK time). However, Samsung’s official US twitter account has already revealed the first official glimpse of what seems to be a new phone.  Only time will tell just what this phone is.

I don’t know about you but I am genuinely excited by this announcement. I know that some fanboys/fangirls will hate me but I am more excited by this announcement than the most recent Apple event where Apple announced a new iPad, a new iPad Mini and a new iMac.

 

Samsung did not “wilfully” infringe Apple’s patents

In the ongoing saga of patent infringement between Samsung and Apple, it turns out that there is yet another twist. Judge Lucy Koh has determined that Samsung did not infringe Apple’s patents. As a result, Apple will not be able to claim triple damages.  In addition to that, there will be no re-trial as the court in California, USA has denied requests for any retrial.

 

Ubuntu for Phones is Coming

Stuff just got real.  Just earlier today, Canonical(the folks behind Ubuntu) announced that Ubuntu is coming to mobile phones. There has been no further information at the time of writing this article but they have said that it should happen soon.  That being said Canonical has put up some information on the Ubuntu website.

I am kind of excited about this and worried about this one. The thing is, the smartphone market is already really saturated.  We already have iOS, Android and Windows Phone completely dominating this market and I fear that Canonical might be a little late to this game.

Happy 20th Anniversary SMS

Yes, readers! It was on this day in 1992 that the first text message was sent. Containing the words “Merry Christmas”, the message was sent from a computer to a mobile phone on Vodafone here in the UK.

I don’t know about you but could this be a celebration too late for the text message?  I say this because Apple have already brought out their own messaging solution called iMessage,  RIM have their own SMS solution called BlackBerry Messenger(BBM) and there’s also a cross-platform solution called Whatsapp messenger.  With very high usage of all of these, is it time for the SMS message to die?  Let me know in the comments.

EE ups data allowances for mobile broadband dongles

T-Mobile and Orange’s 4G network(everything everywhere or EE) have beefed up your data allowances if your using a mobile broadband dongle.  The base plan with 2GB will now have 3GB.  The 3GB plan will have 5GB of monthly usage and the top plan with 5GB of usage will now have 8GB. The prices will stay the same with the 3GB plan at £16 a month plus £50 for the dongle. The 5GB plan will cost £21 per month plus £30 for the dongle and 8GB will cost you £26 a month with the free dongle. However, I should warn you that EE(for the time being) will not give the same treatment to their phone plans.

I don’t know about you but I fear that these prices might be a tiny bit on the expensive side. That being said, 4G is still in its early days here in the UK.

 

RIM launches new version of BBM for BlackBerry Phones

Are you a user of RIM’s BlackBerry Messenger(BBM) app on your BlackBerry device? Then you might be glad to know that there is a new version of BBM available.  This version enables you to make voice calls over Wi-Fi(known as BBM Voice).  You can get it right now from the BlackBerry App World store.

However, I should warn you that the new BBM voice feature will only work when calling someone else using BBM.

Blackberry 10 OS Launch Event Happening late January 2013

RIM president and CEO Thorsten Heins announced in a press release that the BlackBerry 10 Launch event is happening January 30, 2013. The event will happen simultaneously in multiple countries around the world, along with BB10 phone details.

I don’t know about you but I am starting to wonder if RIM are too late to the game with BlackBerry 10.  That being said, I’m going to keep an open mind and see what BlackBerry 10 will bring to the table.

UK’s First 4G Network Finally Launches

A lot of you may have heard about an upcoming 4G network which is a joint venture between Orange and T-Mobile.  Known as Everything Everywhere(EE), the 4G network has gone live in 11 cities including London, Cardiff and Bristol to name a few.  Five mroe cities will get the EE treatment before Christmas this year with the majority of the UK to join before the end of 2014.

The different contracts on offer give you both unlimited calls and text messages.  However, the differentiator is the amount of data that you can consume over 4G.  500MB of data will cost you £46 for a one-year contract, £36 for a two-year contract. The highest of the range of contracts available will give you 8GB of data which will set you back £56 a month for a two-year contract or £66 for a one-year contract.

Personally, I think that this is very expensive especially for a one-year contract with 500MB of data for one month. With those 4G speeds I personally think that anyone will be able to run through their allowance of data within the month and run into overage charges. That being said, this technology is in it’s early days here in the UK and so those prices might go down with time.
