During this month, 10 years ago, Apple launched the iTunes store as a place where people could buy and legally download music. In fact, back in 2003, the iPod was already making a huge impact on the MP3 player market.
In fact, I remember that I did not get my first iPod until around 2004(the year the iPod Mini launched. It was a silver iPod Mini with 4GB of music. For me, it was a breath of fresh air. At the time, I had some other less well-known brands of MP3 Players. When I got the iPod Mini, I was amazed at how good this device was at playing MP3s. Of course, the iPod Mini had a hard drive in there which stored my songs and so it took a couple of seconds to get songs to play.
It was only in September 0f 2006 when Apple started selling full-length movies on the iTunes store alongside songs. At this time, I had a 5th generation iPod which could play video and show photos. At the time, the quality of the video on that screen was considered to be good. I remember watching a lot of video podcasts at the time on that thing and really enjoyed watching video in this way. Best of all, this iPod was pretty darn portable. In fact, I think it’s safe to say that I was never worried about filling up either device with music, video or podcasts.
Of course, in 2008 Apple launched the second generation iPhone called the iPhone 3G and with it, the App Store which was a separate part of the iTunes store specifically for downloading software for the iPhone.
Fast forward to today and Apple’s iTunes store has become a place to buy e-books, music, movies, games and apps. Right now, Apple has become possibly the largest seller of music with over 25 billion songs downloaded.
In terms of the app store, consumers have downloaded over 40 billion apps from the app store since it opened. Based on these figures, Apple’s iTunes store has been really successful to date in providing people a legal way to consume content in video, audio and other formats.
